Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel was a pioneering French fashion designer whose modernist philosophy, menswear-inspired fashions, and pursuit of expensive simplicity made her an important figure in 20th-century fashion. “1920’s Chanel reigned as an innovative designer of clothing. Tremendous influence on fashion” (Gaines pg. 57)  American women especially liked her clothing/couture because it embodies youth and freedom.  “ I wanted to give a woman comfortable clothes that would flow with her body” (chanel)
