Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel was a pioneering French fashion designer
whose modernist philosophy, menswear-inspired fashions, and pursuit of
expensive simplicity made her an important figure in 20th-century fashion. “1920’s Chanel reigned as an innovative designer of clothing.
Tremendous influence on fashion” (Gaines pg. 57) American women especially liked her clothing/couture because
it embodies youth and freedom. “ I wanted to give a woman comfortable clothes that would flow
with her body” (chanel)

Chanel is one of the great
designers that changed how women wore clothes. She redefined how women wore
clothing. “The
Clothes she created changed the way women looked and how they looked at
themselves.” (Gaines pg.19)“More
than dresses to see, she has a message to transmit. Her dream was to take
a woman off the street and transform her” Lilou Marquand former assistant
of chanel“
Chanel… created a feminine personage of sort… never before seen her
influence spread far beyond the limits of her work….. she represented a
new being… he exercised (a reign) over all the women’s society.” Maurice
Sachs
